Garment Rework:
CARDIGAN SKIRT
Spring 2023
Las Vegas, NV
My biggest gripe is that most true sustainable fashion falls into the archetypal Old Navy-esque style. That’s fine, of course, for those who prefer that aesthetic. However, there aren’t many options for people who are into more conceptual, artistic pieces. Sustainability would be much more palatable if there was still a clear passion for design.
“Sustainable fashion” often lacks creativity.
One of the best ways to combat fashion’s overconsumption and sustainability issues is upcycling. Life is breathed into old garments by breaking them down to textile and back up again.
The cardigan skirt is my first attempt to marry sustainability and fashion design through upcycling.

First, I removed the sleeves and closed the armholes.
Then, I added a zipper and created a front seam.
What to do with the pockets and button?
Reposition one of the pockets as a functional design element
Women’s garments seldom have enough pockets.
Add button as faux closure detail
It is my hope that upcycling will usher in a better wave of sustainable fashion practices.
